Kebede Beyene
I am a Research Fellow in pharmacoepidemiology and health outcomes at the School of Pharmacy. I completed a PhD degree at the University of Auckland in 2016 with a focus on prescription medicine sharing behaviours. I also completed BPharm and Master’s degree in pharmacoepidemiology and social pharmacy, both from Addis Ababa University. I have nearly 10 years of experience in pharmacoepidemiology, medicines use behaviours, and health outcome research. I am a lead and co-investigator on multiple grants. My current research centred on evaluating real-world treatment outcomes focusing on cardiovascular and mental health medications.
I am currently collaborating with international leading academics on projects exploring global trends in high-risk medicines use (e.g. opioids, antidepressants, lithium), trends in survival with dementia, and the global burden of hip fractures. I am also collaborating with Nottingham and Hong Kong University researchers on a project examining the relationship between lipoprotein cholesterol and major adverse cardiovascular events in adults taking statins for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Moreover, I have several collaborations with New Zealand based researchers, including on projects assessing the impact of postsurgical chronic opioid use, medication-related burden among older adults, bleeding risk associated with anticoagulants use in patients with cirrhosis, determinants of COVID-19 risk behaviours, and the benefits and risks of statins in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease as well as projects looking at the risk factors for opioid-related respiratory depression and sedation, preventable hospital readmission, and hospital acquired thrombosis. I am experienced in using routinely collected administrative health datasets and population-based observational cohort study designs. In addition, I have extensive experience in pharmacy practice and social pharmacy research as well as health behaviour change models. I have published several referred research articles and conference abstracts, and I am supervising PhD and undergraduate research students.
