Aleksandra Milosavljevic
Aleksandra is a Vernon Tews Educational Trust Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School of Pharmacy. She undertook her undergraduate training (BPharm (Hons)) at the School of Pharmacy and completed her pharmacy internship at Auckland City Hospital. In 2015, she registered as a pharmacist. Aleksandra completed her PhD in 2021, in the areas of pharmacoepidemiology, health outcomes research and pharmacy practice research.
During her PhD Aleksandra examined the impact of a New Zealand wide community pharmacy-based service in improving patients’ medication adherence and clinical outcomes. A mixed methods approach was used, involving ‘big data’ analysis of routinely collected health datasets, as well as qualitative research methods.
While undertaking her PhD, Aleksandra worked at Auckland City Hospital, as a clinical pharmacist in various medical and surgical specialties, including renal medicine, renal transplant, and coronary care. During her clinical work Aleksandra was exposed to a range of complex patient cases, which often relied on high-quality evidence to dictate treatment decisions. Such exposure highlighted for her the positive impact high-quality research can have on influencing practice and contributing to improved patient care.
During the coming years, as a Vernon Tews Educational Trust Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Aleksandra endeavours to continue expanding her research experience, to encompass work on the pharmacoepidemiology of traditional and complementary/alternative medicines (TCAMs). She will be involved in the CAMOMILE seed programme, led by Associate Professor Jo Barnes, which takes the first steps towards routine data collection for TCAMs. This programme of work explores issues relating to the feasibility of routine data collection for TCAMs, the classification of TCAMs’ exposures and outcomes, and the potential to link TCAMs data with existing routinely collected health datasets.
