School of Pharmacy academic and Deputy Head of School, Associate Professor Jo Barnes, is a member of a team of researchers awarded an Health Research Council (HRC) grant of $1.439m to undertake clinical trial of cytisine (a chemical compound found in several plant species) in smoking cessation. The three arm clinical trial will compare cytisine plus nicotine e-cigarettes, with cytisine only, and nicotine e-cigarettes only, in New Zealand adults who are motivated to quit smoking. This grant builds on the considerable success of the team in this area, and is the third HRC project grant that this core team, led by Associate Professor Natalie Walker (National Institute of Health Innovation, University of Auckland), has received to investigate the clinical effects of cytisine in smoking cessation. Results from two previous trials have been published in the journals New England Journal of Medicine, and Addiction.
