Rachael-Sumner

I graduated with my PhD in Pharmacy after completing my Masters degree in Psychology at the University of Auckland. My research bridges the fields of neuroimaging, neuropharmacology and cognitive neuroscience; frequently incorporating changes to visual and auditory sensory processing as an index for brain function. I use electroencephalography (EEG), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) neuroimaging techniques combined with generative computational modelling techniques such as Dynamic Causal Modelling. I have experience incorporating behavioural and biological measures (e.g quantification of analytes in blood) into my research.

I work with Associate Professor Suresh Muthukumaraswamy, investigating the rapid acting antidepressant properties of scopolamine and ketamine, as well as the effects of LSD microdoses on the brain.

I am also forging my own research pathway into examining the effects of sex neurosteroids on the brain. Current research projects include an investigation of preserved cyclicity on the combined oral contraceptive pill using EEG. My focus is on investigating the neurobiology underlying disorders related to major hormonal events such as menstruation and childbirth, and validating potential therapies in humans. For example, catamenial epilepsy, post-partum depression, pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder.
